Hello!
I’m looking for historic preservationists and designers who work with historic homes to answer a few questions for a story about the unseen struggles behind preserving historic homes. I'm looking for sources to answer any questions that jump out at them. LMK if you're available for a follow-up interview, too, please.
1. First things first, what defines a historic home? What are the benefits of preserving historic homes?
2. What are some common but overlooked issues that almost always surprises new owners of historic homes when it comes to home renovations?
3. How do preservation regulations limit what homeowners can do? I know this can vary by locale, but are there any general regulations or do you have any examples of projects where rules made a project especially difficult or costly?
4. In your experience, how do maintenance costs for historic homes compare to modern homes over time—and what kinds of repairs tend to be the most expensive or frequent? What should buyers/new owners know?
5. What’s the best advice you’d give prospective buyers of historic homes … what do you wish they knew before they purchase a historic home?
6. Are there any eras of homes that are more easy to work with than others?
