I’m reporting for Quartz on a possible new career shift, the rise of “learn to craft” as the new “learn to code.” With AI automating and eliminating some white-collar tasks, more professionals and creatives are reportedly turning toward trades in search of stability and meaning—or, at least, rumor has it.
So I’m looking to speak with:
• People who’ve made (or seriously considered) a career pivot from knowledge work or creative fields into trades or skilled manual work, whether carpentry, plumbing, car repair, you name it.
• Career experts, labor economists, or sociologists who can speak to whether this is a real emerging economic trend or more of a rumor/cultural narrative.
• Trade-school administrators, staff within apprenticeship programs, or recruiters who’ve noticed an uptick in applications from white-collar backgrounds.
Thanks! I'd love to hear from you.
